In our first discussion, we explored the birth of Doing Good in Life (DGL®) and how it serves as the essential counterweight to living for oneself. Today, we delve into the practical implementation of this tenet. One of the most common misconceptions about DGL® is that it requires a large bank account or immense spare time. As a Humanologist, I have developed a framework to show that anyone, at any stage of life, can make a profound impact.
I call this framework the 3Ws: Wealth, Wisdom, and Warmth.
While financial security is an important foundation, it is only one way to contribute. In the philosophy of SBOP Living®, we recognize that our most valuable assets are often the ones we overlook.
1. Wealth: Strategic Financial Contribution
Wealth refers to your financial resources. It is the most visible form of giving. For those who have achieved financial stability, DGL® involves strategically directing a portion of that wealth toward causes that align with their values. However, I must emphasize that not everyone is in a position to part with large amounts of wealth all the time. This is why the other two pillars are so critical. DGL® is about the sincerity of the intent, not just the size of the donation.
2. Wisdom: The Gift of the 5Es
Wisdom is perhaps our most underutilized asset. Throughout our professional journey, we spend years acquiring what I call the 5Es: Experience, Expertise, Exposure, Education, and Excellence. These are the tools that build our careers.
As we grow in age and move into our second innings, the goal shifts from gathering to returning. We use a modified set of 5Es to guide others: Experience, Expertise, Engagement, Empathy, and Equanimity.
Sharing your hard won knowledge through mentoring or advising does not cost a single rupee, yet it provides immense value to the next generation. Your wisdom can prevent others from making costly mistakes and help them find their own path to success. This form of DGL® ensures that your intellectual capital continues to grow even after you have stepped away from the office.
3. Warmth: The Power of Human Connection
Warmth is the emotional side of DGL®. It includes your kindness, your ability to listen, and your willingness to offer a word of encouragement. Like wisdom, warmth costs nothing, yet it is a major component of a fulfilling life.
A simple act of compassion or a moment of genuine presence can transform someone else's day. Warmth creates an emotional anchor for your family and builds bridges within your community. It is the human touch that enriches every interaction and fosters a sense of belonging for both the giver and the receiver.
Doing Good is a Habit, Not a Luxury
The philosophy of SBOP® teaches us that Doing Good in Life is not the exclusive domain of the rich or the super-rich. It is not something reserved only for seniors or the silver haired. Instead, it is a habit that can be cultivated by everyone, regardless of age or status.
When you make DGL® a part of your daily rhythm, you discover a deep sense of inner peace and happiness. You realize that true abundance is not found in what you accumulate, but in how you utilize your Wealth, Wisdom, and Warmth to uplift the world around you.
Your Reflection and Action Points
- Audit Your Assets: Beyond your bank balance, what specific Wisdom (Experience and Expertise) do you currently possess that could benefit someone else?
- Offer Your Warmth: Think of one person in your circle who is going through a challenge. How can you offer them a "Sattvic" moment of kindness or empathy today?
- The 5E Pivot: How can you transform your professional Excellence into a form of Engagement that helps a local community project or a young professional?
- Check the Intent: When you perform an act of service, are you doing it for the joy of giving, or are you still looking for external validation?
- Start Small: If you cannot give Wealth today, can you commit to giving ten minutes of your time to listen fully to a family member or a friend?
Your golden moments of a purposeful life are happening right now, in this very second. Do not allow a digital notification to steal the presence required to live them magnificently.
